Outside of your basic living dead, you’ll be dealing with. Zombies in SoD2 come in two varieties: Standard or Freaks, which are enhanced zombies with special abilities.

These skills can be both negative or positive overall, and are often linked to the history of the character (for example, a character who was a professional marksman pre-apocalypse might now have access to a skill dramatically improving their aim, while a character who was living a very inactive lifestyle might only be able to improve their ability to sprint by so much) A sole survivor can be selected to become the leader of the community, and the type of character this leader survivor is will influence how that community operates in the world of SoD2. Some survivors are better suited outside fighting a horde guns blazing, some are better at sneaking and scavenging, and some are just best left back at home to keep up morale or work on the base, and this is due to the skills any random survivor might have. Since the game takes course over several separate areas, it’s important to note your survivors and possessions will move over, and you will receive a reduced refund for the funds sunken into your previous base.Įach survivor in SoD2 comes with their own background and their own RPG-like progression system to evolve them as you play, but more than that, each survivor has their own feelings about the current situation and the decisions that will be made, their own quirks, and their own problems that you will have to consider when playing. As your survivor count and supplies grow, you can gain access to new and higher tiered stations in your home base for you develop, dramatically increasing your survivability. Run out of food or water and morale will drop, people will worry, and some trouble might start brewing behind the frontlines, and that’s just one situation that can occur. Your home base is also home to the community you establish, and you will have to manage them as well. You will need to find sources of electricity to power equipment, sources of water to grow crops, and build defenses so your base is protected from the monsters outside, or risk losing it all. Your home base will need to be stocked with food, medicine, and other supplies for any survivors you wish to bring back, and this is done by scavenging abandoned areas. How will you survive?Įvery player in SoD2 will eventually create a home base to operate out of, providing you with much needed shelter from the never-ending hordes. As if that wasn’t enough, all new to SoD2 is the Blood Plague, a secondary infection capable of infecting still breathing survivors and strengthening the already deadly horde to frighteningly new levels. You will have to scavenge supplies for the communities you establish, interact with other groups of survivors while navigating this hostile world, and deal with problems within your own community, even if it means sacrificing someone still alive. Once a character your SoD2 world dies, they stay dead. Your character and the other survivors you will encounter each have their own history, their own perks & progression, and most importantly, their own life that doesn’t come back. Where most games taking place in the zombie apocalypse seek to specialize in the violence and carnage that comes with the setting, State of Decay 2 takes a different approach and instead focuses on the survival, simulation, and community building aspects many games in the genre entirely ignore, although there will still be plenty of zombie violence for those looking for it.
